how the last request in the Lord’s Prayer is to be rendered: ‘deliver us from evil’, or ‘deliver us
from the evil one’ (Matt 6,13). The Greek, apo tou ponerou, is ambiguous: tou ponerou could be
neuter, meaning ‘evil’, or masculine, meaning ‘the evil one, i.e. the devil’. Both usages are found
in the Greek gospels themselves (e.g. Luke 6:45 and Matt 13:19).
